Ten Stages of Working the Web for Education

by Tom March, Web-based Educator and Director of ozline.com Pty Ltd. • Southern Highlands, Australia

http://www.ozline.com/learning/10stages.html

As you turn to using the Web to support student learning, the first place to look is at your current curriculum. Review your file cabinet filled with great activities and planning books crackling with clever ideas. Because it helps to lead with success and to start out easy, the first way to use the Web with students is as a supplement to what you already do very well. Point your browser to places that accent and enhance what you’re already doing. Try Kathy Schrock’s Guide for Educators (http://discoveryschool.com/schrockguide/) or Blue Web’n (http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/bluewebn). The latter is organized into a matrix that cross-references content areas by Web sites categorized by such traditional notions as "lessons," "resources," and "activities."

For a clearer conceptualization of these categories, read the interactive article "What’s on the Web?"(http://www.ozline.com/learning/webtypes.html) or explore Blue Web’n.

Web Quests

Webquests or Online Research Modules

"Webquests" or "Online Research Modules" are units of work created by teachers to make best use of the internet. They use open-ended tasks to develop the higher order thinking skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Links to websites with useful information has been included to reduce the amount of "timewastage" which so often happens when students use the net. The best way to learn about them is to explore one.

Choosing a WebQuest

The best place to look to help you decide which WebQuest(s) to choose is at your current curriculum on the related topic. Ask yourself, "What has been successful and what has seemed lacking?" If you're happy with the way you introduce the topic, great! If you feel the students get adequate and accurate basic information from a text and your handouts, terrific! If they engage in higher-level thinking and develop authentic learning products they already share with the real world, you're doing an outstanding job! If you see a gap in any of these aspects, think about choosing a WebQuest to fill that need.

On-Line Projects and Lesson Plans

Online projects are becoming increasingly popular teaching tools because of their capacity to engage and motivate students, along with providing real-life experiences that have not previously been possible. Many readers will be familiar online projects such as Book Rap and Travel Buddies, but there are literally hundreds of such projects available. The problem is how finding a suitable one. In many ways the current situation is similar to that of the Internet before the arrival of comprehensive search engines and portals. There was plenty of good material if only you could find an address for it. Surfers used to bookmark all of the potentially useful links they discovered and many were passed on by word of mouth. Here is a brief overview of some of the Australian sites, which list online projects. In many cases the same project is included on several sites, so you still have to hunt through the information to see if the project is suitable for your particular needs.

Oz-TeacherNet at http://rite.ed.qut.edu.au/oz-teachernet/ lists many of the most popular items including Global Youth Forums, Oz- Webquest, Project Atmosphere Australia, Students and Industry Links, Travel Buddies and Virtual Field Trips.

EdNA at www.edna.edu.au continues to provide a useful list ranging from Adopt an Animal to Zeus Speaks. EdNA also has a noticeboad for schools seeking project partners.

IEARN at www.iearn.org.au has about a dozen items including the very popular Teddy Bears and Faces of War.

Secondary Drama and English teachers seeking to establish StageStruck projects for their students with schools overseas should go to the NIDA website at www.nida.edu.au

Aussie SchoolHouse at http://www.ash.org.au/projects is another enduring favourite with a new section called The Ant Farm, which provides opportunities for educators to create and share with other online communities.

The Western Australia Education Department catalogues about sixty links ranging from Airwatch to When Were You Born. Each item indicates the learning area, general age range and the available dates. Clicking on a link takes you to a one-page description of the project including the contact details, learning outcomes and a brief summary. The address is http://www.eddept.wa.edu.au/cmis/eval/curriculum/onlineactivities/curricprojects/proj1.htm

A site which provides models for creating projects your own curriculum needs, is NATCOM3 at http://www.pa.ash.org.au/natcom/natcom3 The material on this site comes from the professional associations for each of the learning areas, for example the Science and Maths Associations. This is not a place where you go to find an actual project. It contains documentation and models to use when setting up an online activity. Finally it is worth having a look at this site http://www.pa.ash.org.au/ to see a database of the Professional Association sites.

Don't forget the Ant Farm at URL: http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/ma.cx.html

One day this sort of facility will let us find an appropriate online project anywhere in the world with a minimum of searching. In the meantime you still have to hunt if you want to locate something suitable, but the teaching and learning outcomes will, in most instances, make such a search worthwhile.

Supporting International Schools Communities

http://www.shambles.net

This website has been created by Chris Smith to support the International Schools communities in 17 countries and regions in Asia. The site has relevance to students, teachers and support staff, it is also designed to be of help to families, both those already settled and those who are planning to move to Asia. It contains the most comprehensive searchable online database of international schools for this group of countries which is accessible in a number of different formats including text and interactive 'Flash' maps. There are also resources to support the daily work of teaching and learning not the least of which is a database of almost 20,000 URLs recommended by teachers, students and families which had been built up over the past three years. Other areas covered include one of Professional Development for Teachers, Advice for Parents, e-learning, utilities and a shop
